Our 'queen of the night' flower is bloomed!

I bought this 'queen of the night' flower in local nursery store around 3 or 4 months ago. I really never expect that it will bloom this fast, for this kind of flower blooms very rarely and it only blooms at night. The flower wilts before dawn. That's why you have to excuse me for the quality of the pics - it's taken at night with my handphone camera.

Queen of the night flower is also known as Dutchmen's pipe (Epiphyllum Oxypetalum). It's a species of cactus. In Indonesia we call it Wijaya kusuma. This flower become a symbol of a city in Central Java, Cilacap, where my husband originally came from.

    Hey,

    it is very interesting and fascinating! I have never seen it before. Do you think it is possible to purchase and grow it in Germany too?
    And another maybe stupid question, but how did you arrange it to hang up that flowerpot?

      Hey Katrin,

      I think it is possible to grow it in Germany and possibly it is already available there. Because this is an easily cultivated and fast growing plant. The German name of this flower is Königin der Nacht, Schlangencereus, Schlangenkaktus. But it should not be kept under 5 C deg during the winter and perform best when you give them lot of sun. It can be grown by cut the leaf and then just let the wound to dry first. Then just plant the leaf in the media, around 2 cm deep.If you plant it deeper it will be rotten.

      About the hanging basket: its basically a common plastic flower pot. Just make 3 holes at the top of the pot in triangle position and insert it with ropes. But i think you can just buy a hanging flowerpot in nursery store because its also available in Indonesia so you don't have to do all that kinds of roping things.
